The story begins at a function held by an orphanage wherein a group of young boys perform a song about orphans. The function is attended by Nawab Sahib who is utterly impressed by young Iqbal’s singing and his capabilities. Nawab Sahib adopts Iqbal and takes him to his house where he lives with his wife, the Begum and his young daughter, Suraiya. Initially, the children have some friction between them but they eventually become friends. While Iqbal grows up to become a doctor, Suraiya falls in love with him and gifts him a big diamond ring to remember her by. A friend of Suraiya’s, Zubeida, often teases her with Iqbal and while Suraiya secretly likes it, Iqbal is repulsed by the teasing. A plague hits a small village and when Iqbal learns of it, he decides to serve at the village and treat the villagers whole-heartedly. At the village, he meets Hamida and the two fall in love with each other. However, the villain of the story emerges as one of the villagers, Dilawar, who is also one of Hamida’s suitors gets jealous of the love between Hamida and Iqbal and decides to do something about it. Due to a series of events, Iqbal is forced to place his diamond ring as collateral with Dilawar. Unfortunately, Iqbal falls ill and Nawab Sahib brings him back home in an ambulance so that he can be taken care of as best as possible. Dilawar, on behalf of Iqbal, hands over the diamond ring to Hamida and she wears it on her finger. However, Dilawar murders Hamida’s father and the Nawab Sahib takes her back to his home to foster her living as an ode to her father and his good nature. Misunderstandings arise between Iqbal and Hamida and strain their relationship but they make amends and get back together. However, Suraiya starts falling ill and shows symptoms of tuberculosis, but her parents set up a marriage between her and Iqbal. Suraiya, however, learns the truth and with a brave heart, accepts the love between Iqbal and Hamida and graciously sacrifices her own love for them before she passes away.
